MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app diary day 70 A.L. All Star Picks

Posted by Drew Zeitlin:

Hello Everybody. We are now about a month a way from the Baseball All-Star game. When we started this diary we were behind the eight ball with the players. It had been over twelve years since we had really followed baseball. We joked about how we knew more of the base coaches and announcers than the players. We have made great strides with the players in the first third of the season. The MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app has made all the difference in the world. As we write this blog post we are listening to the Rockies and D-backs on that iPhone app. So lets pick up the diary for the MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app once again. Today will be day 70.

In our younger days we liked to pick out our all stars about 30 days before the game. So we thought we would pick up the tradition again and give our all-stars for this year about 30 days out. Today's blog post we will look at our American League picks. So here goes nothing.

We start behind the plate and pick the most obvious player for the catching position and that would be Joe Mauer of the Twins. Even though Victor Martinez of the Red Sox has better stats than Mauer, there is a big difference in defense and there just something about Mauer and we have him starting in the All-Star Game. It is a tough battle over at first base. You can make an argument for Morneau of the Twins, at the time of this writing he is only leading the league in hitting. There is also Youkils from the Red Sox and then there is Konerko from the White Sox. However we are going with Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers. Just a little more power than Morneau but you could make an argument and could change our mind. At the keystone position there is no question it has to be Robinson Cano. This guy can hit and field and he plays for the Yankees. We will be hearing a lot more from him in the future. Over at at short another no brainer and we pick future Hall of Famer Derek Jeter of the Yankees. We think everything might have been said about him. To finish out the infield we are going with Evan Longoria of the Rays. He is the best hitter on this best team as of this writing.

As we head to the outfield and DH we wanted to pick a LF, CF, and RF and not just three outfielders. First up is LF and we are going to pick who we think could be the best player in the game and that is Carl Crawford of the Rays. We might have picked him just for how many runs he prevents but he also produces runs as well. Over at CF again we looked at defense as well as hitting and we settle for Tori Hunter of the Angels. As we finish the outfield, our pick for RF goes to Jose Bautista of the Blue Jays. We know he plays a lot of games at third base but how can you deny the guy who leads the league in home runs at the time of this writing. At DH we go with Vladimir Guerrero of the Rangers. To many RBI's and very good batting avg.

There you have it, abullrun's AL starters for the 2010 mid season classic. If you disagree let us know. If you like to read all the post of this diary click here and you will be taken to our blog where you will see all the post in order. Till next time.
