MLB.com At Bat 2010 diary day 5 Multi-tasking

Posted by Drew Zeitlin.:

Hello Everybody. It is day 5 of our experiment with MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app. Nothing has changed in baseball. The last week in spring training is very hard. Ninety-nine percent of the players are ready for the regular season but the regular season is still about a week to go. The freshness of spring training has turned into the drudgery of spring training. It has been about forty-five days since they first reported and it is time to play ball for real. The players, coaches, and fans are more worried of somebody getting hurt than if their team wins. Managers are doing everything not to have their stars in the line-up to long. The regular season starts on Sunday, April 4, 2010 in Boston at Fenway Park against their bitter rivals, the defending world champions, the New York Yankees (that should be a great game). Most of the rest of the teams will start the regular season the next day on April 5, 2010.

Because of where we are at in Spring Training, not much to mention about baseball but we thought we would share our thoughts about some of the features that MLB.com At Bat iPhone app has. The first feature we like a lot is that you can send the audio to the Safari web browser and still listen to the game and check e-mails, text, in other words you can multi-task and still listen to the game. This is very cool. One of the other features that is available for this app is the news. It is split up into two sections. One is for the news around the majors and one where you can find the news about a certain team. So far we find this feature is okay, but nothing great. This again could be do to that it is spring training and not the regular season. The next feature is the standings section. This will be very good in the regular season, useless in spring training. The next feature is the videos. It is set up just like the news feature. You can see featured videos, mostly video clips of home runs, then you can search for videos, or you can pick videos from the teams. These videos are a little light in content, and again we believe there is only so much you can do with spring training games.

According to the description for this app coming for the regular season is Gameday, where you can follow every pitch. Also coming is in game highlights, condensed games, and push notifications. We can not wait for those features and can not wait to share the good and the bad of these features with you.

Here is the good take away for today. We love that you can listen to the games in Safari and multi-task on the iPhone. That will really help us durning the course of the season. The bad take away for the day is that the regular season is still four days away. Till next time.

MLB.com At Bat 2010 diary day 4 Text Messages To Space

Posted by Drew Zeitlin.:

Hello everybody. It is day 4 of the great experiment with MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app. Today we have video. One of the things we were most looking forward to was watching a baseball game on the iPhone. In our first chance to watch a game from the iPhone the game was from WGN. Not that there is anything wrong with watching a game from WGN but we had seen many games on WGN and was looking for something different. The next time we had a chance to watch a baseball game from the iPhone the game was rained out. Rain outs are part of baseball and we were 0-2 in watching baseball from the iPhone. Monday night was different there was no rain and no WGN. Even though it was a Spring Training Game it was a good match up. It was Tampa Bay vs Boston. The Sox had Josh Beckett on the mound. Even though we still know more base coaches and broadcasters then players, we have heard of Josh Beckett, he was the hero for the Florida Marlins in the 2003 World Series.

We put the iPhone on wi-fi, then plug it in (the battery was already low and there was no way it was going to last with a video broadcast), and we sat down to watch our first baseball game on an iPhone. We watch 6 innings of the game and we would have to say we are very impressed of what we saw. The quality was very good. It was so good that we could even see curve balls break, especially Josh Beckett's curve balls. Not sure it was because of the quality of the picture or the quality of the curve ball. It was like watching it on TV except on a much smaller screen. The one problem we did have was reading the small graphics which were usually the player's stats. Not sure if that was the picture quality, screen quality, or this viewer is getting older. NESN did the broadcast and did a great job. They had a lot of guest in the broadcast booth including the GM of the Red Sox, Theo Epstein who really gave a good synopsis of where he thought the Sox were, who was going to make the team, and on the 2010 season. We stopped watching after six innings because the players were reminding us that it was a spring training game and had lost interest.

Video was not the only thing that we experience from MLB.com At Bat 2010. We were able to catch two radio broadcast. The first one was a game between the Rangers and the Rockies. One team that we are a little familiar with is the Colorado Rockies. It sure did not sound like the Rockies sent their top players because we did not recognize very many names and the Rangers announcer did not seem to familiar with those names either. The second game was a game between the Dodgers and the Indians. The Dodgers announcers gave up on this game very early. It was the last week of spring training the players were bored and the announcers were bored. We too had a hard time concentrating on the game and at one point we realized these announcers were talking about everything but the game. The best part came when they were talking about sending text messages to space. After hearing that we knew it was time to call it a night we were bored too.

Here is the good take away for today. The video is great and we are looking forward to the regular season. The bad take away for today is spring training games get sloppy and at some point we all get bored. The fun part was thinking about how does one send a text message to space. Till next time.

MLB.com At Bat 2010 diary day 3 A Voice From the Past

Posted by Drew Zeitlin.:

Hello everybody. It is day 3 of the great experiment. We were excited about Sunday's games. We picked out 3 games we were going to concentrate on. The first game was the Orioles and Blue Jays game. This ties into that the Orioles use to be the favorite team and we thought trying to learn about them again would be fun and growing up we always wanted to hear from the Orioles announcers. Chuck Thompson was the voice of the Orioles when we were growing up. Living in Colorado at that time you could only pick up the Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals, and St. Louis Cardinals on the radio and only at night and only after the sun set. That meant we picked up the game in the 7th, 8th or 9th inning of a game and we were happy to get that. It was Major League Baseball and we loved it. However we never did get to hear any Orioles games on the radio and we never did hear Chuck Thompson. He passed away a couple of years back and we reflect if we only had MLB.com At Bat 1979 how much more fun would we have had listening to Chuck Thompson describe the plays of Jim Palmer, Eddie Murray, Ken Singleton and the rest of the crew. That year the Orioles did make it to the World Series. Sorry for the digression into past Orioles history.

The second game we were going to concentrate on was the Pirates and the Phillies. The main reason this game was chosen was that it was the free TV game that we can watch from the iPhone from. We are very excited to watch a baseball game that does not come from WGN and this game was not coming from WGN. The third game was the Tigers and the Yankees. The main reason was that abullrun's Dad was going to hear a couple of innings of the Yankees (his favorite team, he is from New York) from the radio.

So we are set, 3 games for Sunday, it will almost be like turning the clock back 16 years. We turn on the app and what do we see. Rain Delay on the Orioles and Blue Jays game. We get it rain delays are part of baseball. It will still work, we will just watch more of the Pirates and Phillies on the iPhone. We scroll down and you are not going to believe it. Yep that game is in a rain delay too. That is what you get when you play all the games in Florida. So that leaves us with the Tigers and Yankee game.

We scroll to that game and it is not in a rain delay. Perfect we have a least one game we wanted to listen to, that is available to us. We click on to listen to the Yankees broadcasters. Then it happens, the voice of the Yankees comes on the iPhone and tells us that the clouds are coming and it is going to rain very soon. What got us was not what he said but how he said it. We knew that voice, we had heard it many times in the past. It was John Sterling. John Sterling, Ernie Johnson, Skip Caray, and Pete van Wieren were very big to places that did not have a baseball team. These guys were the voices of the Atlanta Braves when TBS put the Braves on cable and we could watch every game. Remember you could only pick up games on the radio at night so this one big if you liked baseball. It was the early 80's when we they came to Colorado Springs. We watched every game that was on TBS that year and we think it was close to 150 games. Every night we heard those guys call the Braves baseball game. We were in baseball heaven.

It was good to hear John Sterling voice again. The Yankees and the Tigers did play a couple of innings and abullrun's Dad was very excited. However John Sterling was correct the rain came and cancelled the rest of the game. When we checked back the Orioles and Blue Jays game and the Pirates and Phillies game were also cancelled due to rain.

Here is the good take away for today. We love hearing John Sterling call a baseball game he is great. The bad take away for today. Again we find ourselves only knowing the base coaches and the broadcasters, and sometimes it rains and you have no baseball. Till next time.

MLB.com At Bat 2010 diary day 2 Know More Than The Base Coaches

Posted by Drew Zeitlin:

Hello everybody. We did it, the MLB.com At Bat 2010 has been downloaded and now sits in our iPhone. The cost of this app is $14.99 plus tax. When we open the app we see today's scoreboard. The scoreboard shows every game, who is playing who and what time the games start. On the weekends all the grapefruit league games start at 11:00 MT and the Cactus league games start at 2:00 MT.

We start the process in the Grapefruit league (games that are played in Florida) and we choose the old favorite team. That team is the Baltimore Orioles and they are playing the Boston Red Sox this Saturday afternoon. We click on the game and after a couple of minutes figuring how to play the audio we get the voice of the Red Sox (the Orioles broadcast was not available). We are on the 3G network and we are getting very good sound. The first thing we notice is that local radio broadcast has a lot of commercials. Once the commercials are over, we are ready to play ball. We listen for a couple of innings and enjoy it except that we do not know any of the players. Maybe this is from being away from baseball for sixteen years or it's spring training. We are going to have to get up to speed on these players or we are going to be lost. We check the battery on the iPhone and in 3 innings we have dropped from 100% to 70%. Wow that is even a fast drop for the iPhone. We decide to quit, and wait for the Cactus League games to start.

The Cactus league (games played in Arizona) is where the action is going to be today. The main reason is that is the free TV game of the day is the Cubs vs Padres. We wait till 2:00 click on to watch the game and we are taken to the broadcast by WGN. As you probably know you could watch baseball on WGN sixteen years ago, so no change except instead of watching the game on a TV screen, we are watching it on an iPhone screen. We start the game on the 3G network. It is not a bad picture but it could be a little better, so we try the wi-fi and the quality turns to excellent. As we watch the game we notice that we do not know any of the players but we do know the base coaches. This is not good.

After a couple innings we decide to checkout the rest of the Cactus League with a start at the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies broadcast is very low but we can hear it ok. The good news here is that we recognize some of the Rockies Players. As we checkout the rest of the games we start to listen to the Mariners and the Dodgers game through the Seattle broadcasting network. We are enjoying the game because they are interviewing Joe Torre and Vin Scully, two names that we know. The problem is that one is a manager and the other is a broadcaster.

The good take away on the first day is that we like the app a lot and look forward to using it through the season. The bad take away is that just knowing the base coaches is not going to help us. Nobody talks about them. Till next time.

MLB.com At Bat 2010 diary day 1 back to baseball

Posted by Drew Z.:

Hello everybody. We wanted to add a little something to the summer season to this blog. Something a little different and something hopefully entertaining, informative, and fun. We wanted to experiment with a new blog post diary that has to do with technology, the iPhone, and baseball.

A long time ago and in a galaxy far far away we were once big baseball fans. The baseball strike of 1994 put a sour taste in our mouths and information kept coming out about baseball that we did not like and we gave up the game that we loved. Growing up we played the game, collected baseball cards, and studied the game. The memories that we collected were priceless, the information that we gathered from baseball has been invaluable, and the fun and enjoyment we received will never be lost and always be precious to us. Then in 1994 it all stopped. You can count on one hand how many times we have watched a game. Last year we started paying attention a little bit more mostly to keep updated with abullrun's dad who was all excited about his Yankees, talking to our friend Cliff on twitter, and the great season the Colorado Rockies were having. Living in Colorado Springs makes the Rockies the team you want to root for. Fifteen years can be a long time. As we got back into the game a little, they only people that we knew were the base coaches and some of the announcers. They were the players in 1994 that we watched. That is how far behind we were in baseball terms.

We had a new goal how could we get back into the game in 2010? How could it entertain us? What information could we garnish? How were we going to have fun with baseball? This is where technology and the iPhone comes in. In 1994 we were just starting to see new technology, and this internet thing was looking pretty cool. It is a lot better today. There was no such thing as an iPhone in 1994, heck the cell phones were still very big and you paid $10,000.00 a minute (that could be a slight exaggeration). As time moved on that internet thing just kept getting better and better and better. We started to use that internet thing more and more and we liked it and we liked it a lot. You can almost do anything with it (How did we live without it?). Then last year we found that iPhone and all that could be said is wow, wow, and another wow. We could even do more and we were always connected to that internet thing with the iPhone. We could be anywhere and really be anywhere. It is the best of times.

Then early this month we saw it. It fit beautifully. It combined baseball, with technology and wrapped it right into the iPhone. It was a Major League Baseball app for the iPhone called MLB.com At Bat 2010. It could entertain us, it can bring every game to us like we have never had before. Remember it has been sixteen years since we followed baseball, and at that time distribution of games was not that good. MLB.com At Bat 2010 will allow us from the iPhone to listen to every game that is played. They are also going to delivery us one streamed video game a day, follow every pitch in Gameday and watch in game highlights and condensed games. Information will not just be gathered from the baseball side but the technology side as well. How does this tick, why is it ticking and do we need it to tick. Hopefully we have fun finding out the ticking question, the baseball questions, and how the two have merge together.

We are going to share our thoughts on this journey on this blog with this technology. You to can see if the experiment work. Could this baseball app for the iPhone get abullrun back into baseball or had the damage been done and there could be no reunion. How good is the technology? Did we learn anything? Is the future tied to the iPhone? How good is that internet thing? Hopefully these question and many more questions that come from this little experiment will be answered. One thing is for sure we are going to have fun finding out, and we hope you have fun reading about our journey and please feel free to share your thoughts along the way. Comment on the blog post, it can be about baseball, (how is your favorite team doing, do you have a fantasy team, or just ask us a question) it could be about the iPhone, or that internet thing or anything you might think of.

Let the adventure begin.

We Thank You Robert Culp

Posted by Drew Z.:

We have lost another TV icon yesterday. Robert Culp who starred or appeared in many TV show passed away he was 79. He was best known for his role as Kelly Robinson in I-Spy where he teamed up with Bill Cosby. Much of the media coverage has focused on his I-Spy role. Again, like our post about the death of Peter Graves there were other memories and fun moments watching Robert Culp on TV. Before we go down memory lane if you would like to see his story and it is very interesting please click here and you will be taken to his Wikipedia page or if you would like to see a good article about his death click here and you will be taken to a story in Yahoo news.

Robert Culp was on a lot of TV shows some as a guest star role, and some in a reoccurring role. Even though he played a very small part in Everybody Loves Raymond as Ray's Father-in-law. He had some very funny story lines. The best in abullrun's opinion was when he left Debra's Mom for another woman. They all meet up for one of their family holiday get togethers and both of Debra's parents are going to show up and Robert Culp is going to bring the other woman to this get together. Of course everybody thinks it is a younger woman and when he shows up with an older woman. Wow comedy genius and Robert Culp is so good in that episode. If you have not seen this episode, you should make every attempt to especially if you like to laugh.

Robert Culp made us laugh on Everybody Loves Raymond but he really made us think on his guest appearances as the villain on the television show Columbo. How was Columbo going to catch him? In 1971 he starred in "Death Lends A Hand". He plays a detective who tries to blackmail one of his clients and accidentally kills her. Then he and Columbo lock horns and of course Columbo wins. Series creators Richard Levinson and William Link won an Emmy for writing this episode. His next Columbo role is in 1972 is "The Most Crucial Game" where Culp plays a general manager of a pro football team and kills the man who is going to take over the sports franchise with a block of ice as he pretends to be an ice cream delivery man all at the same time that he is suppose to be at the football game. High drama between him and Columbo. You guessed it Columbo wins this one as well. The third episode is from 1973 and titled "Double Exposure". This time we deal with psychology, subliminal advertising, and a little thing called murder. It would not be a Columbo show if Columbo does not get his man. In "Double Exposure" Columbo does get his man. Robert Culp would be in one more Columbo episode but he does not play the main villain. Robert Culp and Peter Falk are great in the cat and mouse and really bring the story to life. If you like mystery, intrigue, great plots, and great acting you will want to watch these episodes.

In 2007 the Archive of American Television interviewed Robert Culp about his life and you can see the entire interview (which goes for about 3 hours) by clicking here you will be taken to YouTube and see this interview. We want to say thank you Robert Culp. Thank you for the memories, thank you for making us laugh, and thank you for entertaining us. You will be missed. We leave you with an excerpt from that interview.

Cross Stitch Kit Dolphins At Play From Bucilla Heirloom Collection

Posted by Drew Z.:

Hello everybody. It is spring time in the Rockies. Yesterday it was in the 60's and tomorrow there is chance for 10 inches of snow. As people like to say only in Colorado can you use your heater and air conditioner in the same day. As we like to say in abullrun land you can use both in the same hour and we have. This talk is leading us to some playful dolphins where it is always warm. The featured item today is part of a group of new items that we have received from Bucilla. You guessed it we are very excited about have these new designs. There were a total of nine new cross stitch designs. What we also like is that eight of these designs are stitched on 28 count fabric. The 28 count fabric is a much harder to find, and is for a much advance stitcher, but you get a much richer finished project. Four of the six cross stitch designs come from the animal family. You have the cross stitch designs Siberian Tiger, then take a look at Wolf Mates, then there is the War Pony and today's featured item. The other five designs are the Butterfly Wreath, then there is the Butterfly Garden, and do not forget about Mother and Child, from the the Dragons, Magical and Mythical category comes Planetarius and Baseball Nostalgia. All great cross stitch designs and all great fun.

Let's go outside and get a breath of fresh air and some of that warm air and head on over to Bucilla and today's featured item is the Cross Stitch Kit Dolphins At Play From Bucilla and it resides in the Cross Stitch Kits-Animals > Animals Misc category. What a site to see. Two dolphins at play at sea. Look at the beauty, look at the fun. You really will love this cross stitch design for the beauty and the fun. The finished size of this fun counted cross stitch design is 13" x 8.75" (33 x 22,3 cm).

The Cross Stitch Dolphins At Play is design by Melinda Blackman. We Thank You Peter Graves

Posted by Drew Z.:

We wanted to do a blog post on the death of Peter Graves. We wanted to talk about more about how we watched and liked his work at abullrun land than just a biography of him. His story is interesting and you would like to see it click here and you will be taken to his Wikipedia page or if you would like to see a good story after is his death click here and you will be taken to this story in Yahoo news.

Growing up the show Mission Impossible was never missed by abullrun's dad. So of course we saw a fair amount of Peter Graves. The show was very well done and of course the mission was impossible but somehow they pulled it off. It did seem that the pulling off a mask was the key ingredient to their success (it was so real). Who cares that the bad guys lost and the good guys won. Your classic TV theme. The coolest part was when the tape that gave Jim Phelps (character name for Peter Graves) his mission would self destruct. At that time very future looking, at this time we have no idea what a real to real tape player is. Right after the tape self destruct one of the best TV themes songs would start. Peter Graves had help with his mission and the show had some great regulars like Cinnamon Carter (Barbara Bain), Barnard "Barney" Collier (Greg Morris), Willy Armitage (Peter Lupus), and Rollin Hand (Martin Landau). We always like Barney because he had the coolest toys to play with and it seemed he could do anything. He was like "Q" from the James Bond movies. The show lasted seven years and had 171 episodes and ended in 1973.

As time went by we saw Peter Graves in many guest appearances on TV. One of the best was when he teamed up with his daughter and did the "this is not your father's Oldsmobile" commercial. Of course the plot of the commercial is that some international group is looking for Peter Graves. As he gets into his Oldsmobile and drives off he has to go through a checkout point and before he get there he takes of the mask and it is Peter Graves' daughter. It is just like Mission Impossible without the self destruct tape. Then we see Mr. Graves in one of the funniest movies of all times. He plays Captain Oveur in Airplane and in a movie that is loaded with memorable quotes, Peter Graves delivers his fair share. To do that movie justice, you should really see it and see how good Mr. Graves was in it.

Then in the mid-eighties one of the local Denver stations decides to play the re-runs of Mission Impossible. abullrun's dad is very excited, but there is a slight problem they are going to be aired at 3:00 AM. No problem the VCR has been invented and it is set for taping. The first showing comes on and the quality is horrible. First abullrun's dad did not need the VCR he set the alarm and got up to watch it. That is a big fan. Did he ever have fun over the course of time watching all the classic Mission Impossible shows again. Even the poor quality of the tape would not stop him from watching that show. Some how he got one of his daughters (abullrun's sister) hooked on watching the show as well. Over the course of time they would look over the TV schedule to see if some station was playing Mission Impossible. They like the show so much they even tried and watch the revival Mission Impossible series in the late eighties but it just was not as good as the original. Even though they liked the movies, they hated that they made Jim Phelps a double agent in the first movie.

Then about five years ago the First season of Mission Impossible came out. Wow was abullrun's dad and sister excited about this. They could not wait to get their hands on these dvds. A good quality dvd to watch one of there favorite shows anytime they wanted to. They even had their wallpaper on their computer with the Mission Impossible coming soon dvd picture. They now have the complete set and can watch any show at anytime, but they still like to find some TV station playing it late at night.

So we want to thank Peter Graves for bringing such excitement and joy to abullrun's dad and sister. As for abullrun we still think that self destruct tape and puff of smoke and that great theme song is still cool. We leave you with a video of that puff of smoke and great intro.
