MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app diary day 64 Roy Halladay Perfect Game and He's From Colorado

Posted by Drew Zeitlin:

Hello everybody. We want to review what happened in baseball yesterday and how it unfolded to us using MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app. So lets pick up the diary for the MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app once again. Today will be day 64. First there was an afternoon game in the Bronx between the Indians and the Yankees. The Indians trailing 10-4 in the 5th rallied for 7 runs in the 7th and beat the Yankees 13 to 11. Nobody was talking about the game, the conversation was about the ball that Alex Rodriguez hit that hit Indians pitcher David Huff in the head and then landed in right field. Huff was carried off on a stretcher but looks to be all right. We missed listening to the game because we were at the Apple store looking at iPads. When we got a moment we were able to call up all the in game highlights of that game and was able to see that at bat (it looked very bad and was kind of scary) and all that scoring of the game.

Next up we were watching the Nationals and the Padres play on the iPhone. Still can not get over how good the picture is and that we are watching Major League Baseball on a phone. It was a very entertaining game which the Padres won 4-2. Besides good baseball, the announcers Dick Enberg and Tony Gwynn did a great job in calling the game except for one minor thing. They were not watching the out town scoreboard. If they had been they might have seen that Roy Halladay was pitching a perfect game. It was only the 20th time in Major League Baseball history someone has thrown a perfect game. We can not blame them to much we could have checked the out of town scores from the iPhone app as well. We did miss the perfect game, however after finding out we went back and watch the in game highlights including interviews with Roy Halladay (did you know he is from Colorado). What was cool was that we were also able to watch the condensed game. So we saw a perfect game in 8 minutes and 40 seconds. It was like we were at the game.

Next up we head to Anaheim for the game between the Mariners and the Angels. The Angels won this game 5-1 with a walk off grand slam home run in the 10th inning by Kendry Morales. You don't get to see that to often, and we did not see either. To many things going on and to many baseball games going on. When we were checking the news feature we saw the story that Morales had won the game with a grand slam but he also got hurt on that at bat. How can you get hurt on a grand slam home run? We flipped over to the in game highlights and saw what every baseball fan is talking about today. Morales broke his ankle durning the celebration as he jumped on home plate. Talk about going from a high of hitting a grand slam to win a game to the low of probably missing the rest of the season as you step on home plate. Wow!

Our last stop is Detroit. As we were going through the in game highlights of all the games we ran across this great catch by Gabe Gross of the Oakland A's. You gotta see it to believe it. With the MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app we felt we did not miss anything in baseball even though we missed them all at the time they were happening. We are liking this app more and more each day. If you like to read all the post of this diary click here and you will be taken to our blog where you will see all the post in order. Till next time.

It Is Time For Another Bad Joke. Parrots?

Posted by Drew Zeitlin:

From time to time we like to share bad, old or corny jokes mostly on twitter but we are going to share them on this blog from time to time as well. Here is today's edition.

A lady goes to her priest one day and tells him, 'Father, I have a problem.

I have two female parrots,

But they only know how to say one thing.'

'What do they say?' the priest inquired.

They say, 'Hi, we're hookers!
Do you want to have some fun?'

That's obscene!' the priest exclaimed,
then he thought for a moment.

'You know,' he said, 'I may have a solution to your problem.

I have two male talking parrots,
which I have taught to pray and read the Bible.
Bring your two parrots over to my house, and we'll put them in the cage with Francis and Peter.

My parrots can teach your parrots to praise and worship,
And your parrots are sure to stop saying .
That phrase . . In no time.'

Thank you,' the woman responded,
'this may very well be the solution.

The next day, She brought her female parrots to the priest's house.

As he ushered her in, she saw that his two male parrots
were inside their cage holding rosary beads and praying.

Impressed, she walked over and placed her parrots in with them.

After a few minutes, the female parrots cried out in unison:
"Hi, we're hookers! Do you want to have some fun?'

There was stunned silence.

Shocked, one male parrot looked over at the other male parrot
And exclaimed,
"Put the beads away, Frank. Our prayers have been answered!"

MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app diary day 62 Ubaldo Jimenez Can Pitch

Posted by Drew Zeitlin:

Hello everybody. You know anything can happen in baseball. There are baseball stories some true some not so true but usually they are colorful and fun, and the one that I am going to tell you is true and 17 years ago you would not believe it. It is time to pick up the diary for the MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app once again. Today will be day 62. The story starts back in 1993 with the birth of Major League Baseball in Colorado. One of the big concerns when baseball came to Colorado was that all the hitting records could fall because of the altitude. Another concern was who would want to pitch in Colorado on a full time bases. They would have to be nuts. There ERA could be in double digits. The Rockies were aware of this potential problem. They would get young pitchers who threw ground balls. The problem with this theory is that every team wants young pitchers who throw ground balls, and they are hard to find. In the supplemental draft the first player was pitcher David Nied. He wasn't quite the answer as he won a total of 17 games in the majors. The first couple of years the pitchers that wore the Rockies uniform did compile some bad ERA's. Was it the altitude or was it bad pitching. The Rockies tried everything young pitchers, old pitchers, they traded for pitchers, they drafted pitchers, they even gave a couple of pitchers a whole lot of money to pitch. Nothing seemed to work especially that last option of giving a whole lot of money to pitchers. There would be some success for certain pitchers but it usually did not last. The team ERA was in the 5's and sometimes touch the 6's.

It looked like it was the altitude but it sure did seem strange that the altitude did not effect the better pitchers in the league. Then came the 1998 All-Star Game to Coors Field and all kinds of offensive records were broken with an American League 13-8 victory. Even when the best pitchers in the league showed up there was 21 runs scored. It was true you just could not pitch in Colorado. Or was it? First the Rockies put the humidor to work. The humidor is a method where the Rockies have kept baseballs in an atmosphere controlled climate, this is to keep the baseball from shrinking, hardening and losing friction in Colorado's unique environment. The next thing they did was scout and find better pitching. With better talent and a ball that kind of equals out the altitude the Rockies pitching got better. The team got better. The Rockies team ERA now was under 5 and shrinking. The Rockies went to the World Series in 2007 and made a trip to the playoffs in 2009. Although the Rockies pitching was a lot better no pitcher really was very dominate.

Then 2010 came and the Rockies have the best pitcher in baseball as we write this post. His name is Ubaldo Jimenez. He is dominate and he pitches full time for the Rockies. We know it is still early and anything can happen in baseball. At the end of May Ubaldo leads the majors in wins he is 9-1. He leads all of baseball in ERA with an ERA of 0.88. That is right an ERA 0.88 and pitching full time at Coors Field. Did we mention that he threw a no hitter in April. Wow what a season, what a pitcher, what a story. Not sure back in 1993 or 1998 or 2002 anybody could have imagined that a pitcher from the Rockies would achieve such things. But its all true. If your a Rockies fan it is almost unbelievable.

A man is driving down a country road when he spots a farmer standing in the middle of a huge field of grass. He pulls the car over to the side of the road and notices that the farmer is just standing there, doing nothing, looking at nothing.

The man gets out of the car, walks all the way out to the farmer and asks him, "Ah excuse me mister, but what are you doing"?

The farmer replies, "I'm trying to win a Nobel Prize."

"How"? asks the man, puzzled.

"Well, I heard they give the Nobel Prize to people who are out standing in their field."

It Is Time For Another Bad Joke. We Saved Some Up.

A man left for work one Friday afternoon. But it was payday, so instead of going home, he stayed out the entire weekend partying with the boys and spending his entire pay check.

When he finally appeared at home on Sunday night, he was confronted by his angry wife and was barraged for nearly two hours with a tirade befitting his actions. Finally his wife stopped the nagging and said to him, "How would you like it if you didn't see me for two or three days"?

He replied, "That would be fine with me."

Monday went by and he didn't see his wife. Tuesday and Wednesday came and went with the same results. But on Thursday, the swelling went down just enough where he could see her a little out of the corner of his left eye.

MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app diary day 59 The Box Score Can Be Your Best Friend

Posted by Drew Zeitlin.:

Hello Everybody. It has been over a week since we have updated this diary. We have had a lot of birthdays, graduations, out of town stuff, old friends and other stuff that has limited posting about one of our favorite iPhone apps. It is time to pick up the diary for the MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app once again. Today will be day 59.

With all the things going on we were not able to watch and or listen to very many games. However, we were able to keep up to date with the season with the other features of this iPhone app. We have talked about these features in past posts. The Box Score featured saved many days. It is amazing how much a box score can tell you what happens at a baseball game. At the end of the day or when some free time came available we could check the box score and see what happend in that particular game, it was great. It was like the old days when you only got a box score in the paper the next day. The other feature that really complimented the box score was the in game videos. After dissecting the box scores we would then head on over to the in game videos and see all the highlights of the game. It was great. These were like new days. You could see the overall game in the box score and see the highlights of the game to give you a great sense of what happend and we could do it when we wanted to. Not when the paper came or when the sports came on the local news but when we wanted to or had the time to look at. It was a great feeling. The other feature that we used a lot was the standings feature and you know what that gives you.

The MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app really delivered the goods for us in our very busy time. It looks like things are more back to normal and we will be able to listen and watch some more games. If you like to read all the post of this diary click here and you will be taken to our blog where you will see all the post in order. Till next time.

It Is Time For Another Bad Joke

Posted by Drew Zeitlin.:

From time to time we like to share bad, old or corny jokes mostly on twitter but we are going to share them on this blog from time to time as well. Here is today's edition.

An elderly man on a Moped, looking about 100 years old, pulls up next to a doctor at a street light.
The old man looks over at the sleek shiny car and asks, "What kind of car ya got there, sonny?"
The doctor replies, "A Ferrari GTO. It cost half a million dollars!"
"That's a lot of money," says the old man. "Why does it cost so much?"
"Because this car can do up to 320 miles an hour!" states the doctor proudly.
The moped driver asks, "Mind if I take a look inside?"
"No problem," replies the doctor.
So the old man pokes his head in the window and looks around. Then, sitting back on his Moped, the old man says, "That's a pretty nice car, all right.... but I'll stick with my Moped!"
Just then the light changes, so the doctor decides to show the old man just what his car can do. He floors it, and within 30 seconds the speedometer reads 160 mph.
Suddenly, he notices a dot in his rear view mirror. It seems to be getting closer !
He slows down to see what it could be and suddenly WHOOOOSSSHHH! Something whips by him going much faster!
"What on earth could be going faster than my Ferrari?" the doctor asks himself.
He presses harder on the accelerator and takes the Ferrari up to 250 mph.
Then, up ahead of him, he sees that it's the old man on the Moped!
Amazed that the Moped could pass his Ferrari, he gives it more gas and passes the Moped at 275 mph and he's feeling pretty good until he looks in his mirror and sees the old man gaining on him AGAIN!
Astounded by the speed of this old guy, he floors the gas pedal and takes the Ferrari all the way up to 320 mph.
Not ten seconds later, he sees the Moped bearing down on him again! The Ferrari is flat out, and there's nothing he can do !
Suddenly, the Moped plows into the back of his Ferrari, demolishing the rear end.
The doctor stops and jumps out and unbelievably the old man is still alive.
He runs up to the banged-up old guy and says, "I'm a doctor.... Is there anything I can do for you ?"

The old man whispers,

"Please unhook my suspenders from your side view mirror"

MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app diary day 46 Unwritten Rules

Posted by Drew Zeitlin.:

Hello Everybody. Today we want to talk about unwritten rules in baseball terms. There is has been a lot of talk about this subject and we thought we would add our two cents worth as well. It is time to pick up the diary for the MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app once again. Today will be day 46. Most of the controversy about unwritten rules has come from Dallas Braden. That's right the guy that just pitched the perfect game for the Oakland A's. A couple of weeks ago Braden was upset that after a foul ball, Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees ran over the pitching mound on his way back to first base. We were listening to this game on the Yankees network, and John and Susan at the time had no idea what the argument was about. Of course the press got a hold of the story and now it has been debated in every corner. After Braden threw the perfect game he and his Grandma took shots at Alex Rodriguez putting this unwritten rule back into the play. To us this is stupid even it is unwritten rule that only hand full of people have heard of. It sounds like what gang members and or mafia members say. This is our turf and you come on our turf we will have to hurt you. It is a baseball game that just had a foul ball, who cares how the runner gets back to first. As a baseball fan who likes the game to move faster, the faster he can get back to first base the better, and the faster the pitcher can get back on the mound and start pitching the better. If this is an unwritten rule they should deleted it from the unwritten rule book because it stinks.

The second unwritten rule we want to talk about also includes Dallas Braden and the game he pitched the perfect game. This unwritten rule involves Evan Longoria bunt attempt in the 5th inning. According to a lot of people Evan Longoria is the best player on the Rays (we would say Carl Crawford is but Longoria is very good). Trying to get something started Longoria tried a bunt that went foul (good thing nobody was on first and had to return to the base). He then struck out on that at bat. Again controversy is upon us because of unwritten rules. It sounds like if a pitcher is pitching a no hitter or perfect game you are suppose to swing away no bunting, no walking, or being hit with a pitch. How dare a hitter try to get on base and make the pitcher pitch from the stretch and give your team a chance to win the game. A lot of pitchers when they have to pitch from the stretch are not the same pitcher. It is your duty as a hitter no matter what the pitcher is doing to reach base. Who knows if Longoria reaches first base, the pitcher has to pitch from the stretch, the next batter was Carlos Pena who is very capable of hitting a home run. Next thing you know the game is 4-2 the pitcher now has his concentration interrupted B.J. Upton is now up to bat and maybe he starts a rally. Remember Tampa Bay has the best record in baseball and have some great players. Sometime with a team like that, all you need is to get a rally started is to get the pitcher in the stretch. The written rule is try to win every game especially for your fans, and the integrity of the game. This is another unwritten rule that should be deleted because it is worse than the first.

There are other unwritten rules like the pitcher is suppose to hit the next batter up after the previous batter hits a home run. Another stupid unwritten rule that baseball plays by. There was a good article by Jason Turbow titled "The 'Code': Ten unwritten baseball rules you might not know" and you can read that article by clicking here. And here is a good article by Duk about the Longoria bunt attempt titled "Braden's perfecto could've ended on an unwritten rule violation" and you can see that article by clicking here. MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app diary day 44 Dallas Braden Perfecto

Posted by Drew Zeitlin.:

Hello Everybody. This is the last post on our early season prediction and kind of adjusting them after the first month of the 2010 baseball season. We had to do this because we were making wild picks because we had very little knowledge of the players and teams at that time. After following baseball again on the iPhone we had at least a clue again. Mind you not a very good clue but at least a clue and we wanted to re-set those predictions that we made before the season started. For the most part we did not make a lot of changes from the early season prediction. We thought our biggest mistake was not having the St. Louis Cardinals in first place in the NL Central. Outside of that we stuck with our picks but we were at least able to tell you why. Today we finish up in the AL Central. It is time to pick up the diary for the MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app once again. Today will be day 44.

A quick review of the early season picks has the White Sox winning the division, the Tigers finishing in second, the Twins slotted for third, the Indians taking home the fourth place, and the Royals in the basement. As with the NL East and the AL West we are not going to change a thing. We know and can hear you screaming at you computer the White Sox what is wrong with abullrun. What we can see is a pretty good pitching staff which we think has performed very poorly up to this date. Of course we are counting on a turn around. They currently have the leader in HR in the American League in Paul Konerko and a line-up that has some potential. We know that the Twins and the Tigers on paper have better teams but we like this White Sox team and we need a surprise team and we pick Chicago. The Tigers really found a way to loose this division last year. Miguel Cabrera is one of the best players in the league and the Tigers should be in the hunt all season. So should the Twins. The defending division champs got a big shot in the arm by playing in Target Field. A new stadium like this gives you a positive intangible that you can not measure. The down side to the Twins is they lost their closer at the start of the season. Right now the bullpen has not felt that lost, but we believe as the season goes on they will. As we said earlier the Tigers and Twins could also win this division. However, the Indians and the Royals do not have enough talent to compete all year long. As of today the Royals are already ten games under .500. Very hard to compete when you are that many games under .500 this early in the season.

We want to comment on Dallas Braden's perfect game today. We were notified by abullrun's dad that he had a perfect game in the 8th inning. We then hit the Oakland A's radio broadcast so we could listen to the final six outs. It was very exciting you don't get to see or hear to many perfect games even if it is the last two innings. After the game, about five minutes later the in game video from MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app we saw the last out and the celebration. About 30 minutes later we saw every out of Branden's perfect game, then a montage of both the A's and Rays radio and TV coverage of the last inning of the perfecto. There was also an interview of his Grandma on his perfect game. We thought that all those videos and in such a short time was perfect. If you like to read all the post of this diary click here and you will be taken to our blog where you will see all the post in order. Till next time.

MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app diary day 42 The Rangers Can Hit

Posted by Drew Zeitlin.:

Hello Everybody. We are almost done with our look back at our predictions from the start of the season. Just two divisions left and both from the American League. You have to be careful when looking at the standings in April. A lot of teams and or players get hot and some teams look better than they are and some teams who are good are struggling. Some players that will have major impact on the season are either hurt or in the minors. They will play and make a difference in June, July, and August. Nobody knows who they are yet. Some teams have injuries now and are just trying to stay close and will make they runs later. Some teams are older, and their injuries or tiredness will show up in the dog days and they will falter. Some teams are young and the young players will come together and take off. It is a long way to October and there are many turns left in a long season. Let's take a look at the AL West. It is time to pick up the diary for the MLB.com At Bat 2010 iPhone app once again. Today will be day 42.

A quick review, of the before the season predictions reveals that we had the Rangers winning the division, with the Angels coming in second, the A's take the third slot, and in the basement we find the Mariners. Just like the NL East we like our predictions and will keep this order. As in the NL East we now have a much better clue about these teams. The big reason we like the Rangers is that they can hit and they are aggressive. If the Rangers were in the AL East they might finish in fourth. The AL West is week and the Rangers have much more hitting than the rest of the division and we think that will be the difference. The Angels always seem to find a way to win and they are they are the defending AL West champions. They added Hideki Matsui and that will help. They have better pitching and a more balance team, and a very good manager. We would not put it past the Angels for winning the division again. The A's have an interesting team. We like some of their pitching but they really lack the bats. It looks like they are building something but they still have a ways to go. We are not sure what the Mariners have. They do have some pitching with Cliff Lee and company but their hitting seems very week. They were looking at having Milton Bradley as the clean-up hitter and nothing against Milton Bradley but you don't want him as your clean up hitter.

A feature we have talked about before but we are now using differently and more often is the Gameday feature. We listen to a lot of games and we watch about two games a week on the iPhone. We have really enjoyed those two features. The Gameday feature allows us to follow the game pitch by pitch and player by player. Without any sound or having to follow the game by video. It just gives a text play by play. If there is an exciting play we just wait a couple of minutes and we can see the play on the in game videos. We don't miss anything and it allows us to do work that we need concentration in and we would rather not have noise in the background. Getting two things done at the same time. You have to love it. If you like to read all the post of this diary click here and you will be taken to our blog where you will see all the post in order. Till next time.
